Who are you?
What do you allow to define you?
The answers to these questions deeply impact the choices you make and the life you lead. But you’re not alone in asking these questions. We all seek the answers.
Alex and Stephen Kendrick—creators of War Room, Courageous, Fireproof, and more—center their latest film around such questions and the topic of identity. In OVERCOMER (releasing August 23), viewers journey through a convicting and heartwarming storyline of John Harrison, his family, a Midwestern town, and a high school cross-country runner, Hannah.
What is OVERCOMER?
John is a highly successful basketball coach who, at the closing of a prominent factory in the small-town-America home, is faced with his basketball team losing its players as the families move away. Now placed in a cross-country coaching role, his path crosses with Hannah, a high school student searching for her own identity amid moving to a new school. As she makes discoveries about her family—as John grapples through what is at the core of who he is as a father, husband, coach, and more—you’ll be taken on a journey of struggle, triumph, hope, and encouragement.
Featuring Pricilla Shirer, Shari Rigby, Alex Kendrick, and more, the family-friendly film OVERCOMER leads you alongside John and Hannah to discover that grasping who we are begins with understanding more of who God is. It opens up the conversation for you to pursue God’s character and your identity.
Why Groups?
But the conversation is too fruitful and impactful to stop there. Lifeway has created resources to help you and others in this journey toward identity in Christ.
Using clips from the OVERCOMER film, the Overcomer Bible Study (available now) takes readers on a four-week journey to ask the hard questions of who we are in light of who God is. With discussion sections and weekly content to help us continue to process the deep questions, this study can be engaged with individually or in a small group or Sunday school setting.
Additionally, the Defined: Who God Says You Are Bible study, written by the Kendricks brothers, takes you on an eight-week journey through the Book of Ephesians to deepen your understanding of identity. Diving into Scripture and gaining from the richness of the text, readers will learn how who God is impacts everything about who they are. This study is great for small group use as well as individual use.
The Defined study is not just for adults; it’s also available in kids and teens versions. Priscilla Shirer further expands on these heart-gripping topics in Radiant, a new book aimed at teens and young women, and the Kendricks engage in the conversation through Revealed for teen boys.
What Now?
You have an opportunity to dive into identity alongside other sisters in Christ. Consider taking a group of women to see the featured film. This can offer conversations starters as a fun ladies-night-out or can be a great back-to-small-group fall kickoff outing.
Then, follow up the convictions and questions from the movie through one of the Bible studies, and even get engaged with the family-friendly film and follow up message through resources for all ages.
