Update // Congratulations to our winner for this giveaway, Jan!
Every six months, I want to quit my job.
I mean it—every six months, I want to quit my job. It has nothing to do with the place I work or the people I work with, but I just get antsy about every six months. Maybe it’s because I’m a Millennial, or maybe it’s just life as an adult. I moved a lot in my 20s, and it’s like I get itchy for change.
I’m an Event Coordinator, and there’s nothing in my job that I love more than being on the ground at an event. I love meeting women, hearing their stories, and seeing them engage as leaders. After four years of this job, I’ve come to realize that discontentment and restlessness tend to creep up when I’m in the office for a long stretch, not interacting face-to-face with the women I am passionate about serving.
Most of the talk about quitting my job stays right where it should—inside my head. But sometimes, I need to say how I’m feeling out loud to a friend. I’ve got friends who are safe spaces for me, and they ask me questions like these:
Has God released you from where you are?
What has God been teaching you in your quiet time?
Has something happened recently to make you feel restless?
Ninety-nine percent of the time, I just need a good dose of perspective. I need to be reminded that work is…well, work. And sometimes it’s hard. But what I know to be true is that I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be. I’m passionate about my work, but I know that it’s not all going to be easy. Some days are really challenging, and I go home feeling like I don’t have anything else to give.
The reality is that I have to continue to do my job at 100%, even in seasons when it’s hard or I don’t feel like it. Paul addresses this concept several times in his letters to the early church:
“Whatever you do, do it enthusiastically, as something done for the Lord and not for men.” Colossians 3:23
“I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called…” Ephesians 4:1
Whatever God has called us to do comes with a standard of excellence that we have to meet. It’s not about our feelings or opinions, it’s about serving the Lord well wherever He has called us to work. Doing this gives us an incredible opportunity to be a witness to those around us with our actions. When all we do is gripe and complain, it’s a poor testimony of the God we serve and the Gospel we believe.
If you’re in a season of struggling to find contentment in your work, I encourage you to pray about it. Ask God to change your heart and show you where He’s at work. He may be in the process of releasing you to do something else, but until He does, be faithful where you are. Honor Him in the work that He has entrusted to you.
He will be faithful to you, but you have to be faithful in everything He puts before you.
