Because it’s the 20th Anniversary of Lifeway Women’s partnership with Beth Moore, we thought it would be a great opportunity to ask her some questions. And we’d love to share her answers with you! This is part two of a three-part series. Click here to see Part 1.
Was there a turning point in your spiritual journey?
The huge turning point in my spiritual journey was at 27 when I took my first Bible doctrine class and a man walked to the podium, opened his Bible, and taught with a passionate love for Jesus and the Scriptures that I’d never beheld in my entire life. I got in the car and cried out to God, “I don’t know what that was but I want it!” My love affair in those sacred pages began that very day and was still with me this morning all by myself at my kitchen table.
What do you know today that you wish you would have known in your 20s?
That God really could.
That God, having seen us in the dark, really could teach us how to live in the light. That He really could heal a broken heart, mend a badly-bruised mind, truly and completely forgive all our sins, love us and remain steadfastly with us through absolutely anything and alter a whole family line in one generation.
That God really could.
Is there a Bible study that is most dear to you?
Each of the Bible studies are so dear to me because they represent miles on my own life-journey spent with Jesus in the pages of His Word through all the joys and heartaches of an eighteen-month stretch of time. Jesus has not taken me on those 15 journeys just as a teacher. He has taken me as a student. I love studying the Scriptures. It is like food and drink to me. I love the research process. I love the thrill of discovery. I love the sound of a commentary cracking open. I even love the sound of the song my Logos Bible Software plays when I open the application on my laptop. But Jesus doesn’t just take me on those journeys as a student either. He takes me along as His own beloved child. Each day I’ve studied, He knew what calls would come in, what crises would occur, what needs would arise, what fears would stir up, what tears would fall, and what sounds of laughter would echo through my home. I trust God and believe Him to do exactly the same thing with every woman who sits on the other side of that page with her open Bible in one of these journeys. Over and over women have said, “God knew that very day exactly what Scripture I would need.” He is not only the God of time. He is the God of timing.
All said, I’d consider Breaking Free the closest to my own life message. It was my journey to a liberty in Christ I’d never known possible. It is not dearer to me than the others but I suppose you could say that, in some ways, it came from somewhere deeper.
And then there’s Esther. That was a total blast. And Daniel, because it hurt so good.
And walking up those 15 steps with the Psalms of Ascent in Stepping Up.
And James: Mercy Triumphs, because I got to partner with my beloved and brilliant daughter, Melissa.
And, good grief, I loved Children of the Day so much. It is the one most presently alive in my bones because it is so recent.
And I still say that 5-Statement Pledge of Faith from Believing God continually. Those statements are plastered on the wall right across from my elliptical where I work out in the morning.
So there you go. When it comes down to it, I can’t even answer the question. They each have their own space carved out in my heart. It has been the joy of my serving life to seek Christ Jesus with other women through those journeys.
