Back in the early days of my business career I felt the itch to branch out on my own. The question was: Doing what? I decided it would be best if I took my newly found computer skills and see if I could persuade anyone to hire me for part-time work since I was working a full-time job in another field at the time.
I decided to name the company Pellegrino Management Systems. I loved the name and began to share my vision with co-workers. However, one day as I was sharing the name with a woman I worked with she said, “Are you kidding?” I asked her why she would say that, and she responded, “Take a look at the initials of your company.” When I looked, I realized it would probably not be a good idea to have a company called PMS!
Purpose needs to be fleshed out. Being able to bounce ideas and thoughts off some trusted friends can be invaluable and save you a whole bunch of headaches (and embarrassment)!
Think about it…
Have you ever “discovered” what you thought your purpose was only to have it blow up in your face? What if you had a strong inner circle to act as an “advisory board”? Do you think that would have made a difference? Do you have an inner circle that you can trust? If not, maybe it would be a good idea to start building one today!
