As men, we can get caught up in the lure of a dream or goal. When it doesn’t work out, we get discouraged and forget to look for God’s purpose. I experienced this about two years into my career. I was working with a headhunter to find a new job, interviewing at the Sealed Air Corporation.
Learning from my previous mistakes, I was both professional and polished. I left feeling confident that the job was mine. When I got home, the headhunter called and said, “I’m sorry Joe. They chose someone with a little more experience, but they really liked you and want you to come back to interview for a different position.”
Believe it or not, that scenario repeated itself three times. All told, I interviewed four times at the Sealed Air Corporation. I never got the job. After the fourth interview, I was devastated. I bawled my eyes out.
The next day, a seemingly random wrong-number phone call put me in touch with another headhunter. She took advantage of her mistake to drum up business by asking if I was looking for a job. You betcha!
Through my new headhunter, I interviewed at another company and met the controller, Arnold Kezbom. Kezbom and I hit it off, and he hired me. I ended up following him to three jobs, each time getting a $5,000 raise. The whole experience gave me a well-rounded business background that provided the confidence I would need to eventually run my own business.
Think About It…
I didn’t see the silver lining when Sealed Air turned me down over and over again. Most people don’t when they are in the midst of a bad situation. But, keep your eyes open a little wider. The real opportunity might be just a phone call away!
