What a man believes about God is the most important thing about him. If you are struggling to believe, struggling to persevere, struggling to carry the heavy weight that God puts on many men’s shoulders, you need strong biblical theology to carry you through. Someone has said that too many times we pray for easier paths when we ought to pray for stronger shoes. And the stronger shoes of the Christian life are built from a robust, biblical theology. Your success in acting like a man will be a product of how well you really know God’s Word.
Standing firm in the faith means holding biblical ground without compromise. It is active standing, fighting off the enemy who wishes to tear down the faith and reduce its influence in your life and the world. This is military language that calls to mind the courageous stands taken by the Texan defenders at the Alamo or the Spartans at Thermopylae. It’s about having a band of brothers to stand with you no matter how daunting the opposition. And it’s vitally important that we stand together, not alone.
