Introductory Activity – Song Hide and Seek
- Cards with names of familiar worship songs
Hide the cards around the room. Choose a child to go and find one song card. When she comes back to the group with a card, she (or you) can lead the group in singing that song. Choose another child to find a new song to sing. Continue as time permits. Tell kids that they will hear about a group of people who sang to worship God.

Game – Tabletop Golf
- Paper cups, scissors, pom-poms, craft sticks
Cut an arch or three-sided opening in the side of a cup (like a notch from the top). The opening should be large enough for a pom-pom to roll through. Prepare 3 or more cups. Arrange the cups, top side down, along the side of a table, with the opening facing the other side. These are your golf “holes.” (You may want to tape the cups to secure them.)
Group kids at the table opposite the golf holes. Invite a child to use a craft stick to hit a pom-pom and try to get it in a hole. If she hits a pom-pom into a hole, ask a review question. Continue to play to review the Bible story. You could ask kids to say the Life Point or the Bible Verse when they score.
Craft – Bell Sticks
- Unsharpened pencils or chopsticks (one per child), chenille craft stems, jingle bells, lengths of ribbons (optional)
Give each child a pencil or chopstick. The child can thread a bell to the middle of a chenille craft stem. He can place the bell on the end of the pencil and wrap both ends of the craft stem tightly around the pencil, covering the pencil and attaching the bell to it. Add another craft stem to secure the ends of the first one and continue wrapping around the pencil. Add additional bells occasionally as you choose. Cover at least half of the pencil; you can cover it all if you choose. Tie on lengths of ribbon as streamers, if you choose.
Sing a worship song and lead kids to shake their bell sticks as they sing. Talk about ways to sing and worship God.
Introductory Activity – Verse Relay
- Dry erase board and markers, Bible
Group kids into two teams. On your signal, the first player of each team runs to the board and writes the first word of the Bible verse. Then he runs back to the team and tags the next player. The next player runs to the board and adds the next word, and so forth. If a person doesn’t know the next word, she can look up Psalm 9:2 and find the next word. After teams finish, say the verse together. Tell kids that they will think about singing and praising God today.

Game – Hit the Target
- Masking tape, index cards, marker, beanbags
Make a large four-layer target on the floor using tape. Print point values on cards and tape to each section of the target.
Group kids into two (or more) teams. Lead teams to take turns tossing the beanbag onto the target. Ask a review question and award points tossed for correct answers. Ask questions of other stories about church in this unit or lead kids to say the Bible verses or Life Points for additional points.
Craft – Verse Band
- Paper plates, jingle bells, chenille craft stems, dowels, plastic cups, scissors, hole punches, markers, heavyweight paper, straws, masking tape
Tell kids that they can create instruments using the materials. Encourage them to experiment with different ways to make sounds or use the materials to create. As they work, talk about the Bible story. Talk about instruments and groups that your church uses to sing songs and worship God. After kids complete their instruments, lead them to play a steady rhythm and repeat the Bible verse. Or they can create their own song with the verse. Encourage them to play and sing it to worship God.
