Christians often look back at certain events in their lives and see that, although they may not have been aware of it at the time, God was at work. Esther could attest to that. Esther was a young Jewish girl in a strange land, and God was at work in her life, putting her in the right place at the right time. She may not have been aware of it at the time, but God was working behind the scenes to put her in a place where He would use her to make a big difference
When Esther found herself in Persia and in the harem of King Ahasuerus, she was, to put it mildly, in an uncomfortable position. She was a stranger, cut off from everything familiar in her life. And even though she was in a peculiar position, she was, at heart, a Jew. As one of God’s people, she was willing to stand up and stand out for the sake of what she valued.
Throughout the centuries, there have been many followers of Christ who, despite the threat of persecution, stood up for what they believed. Today, in a culture which is becoming increasingly anti-Christian, when we stand up for Christ, we are likely to face persecution, though the threat of death seems highly unlikely in America. Nonetheless, we need to ask ourselves—Am I willing to stand for what’s right, reflecting God’s character, no matter the consequences?
- Anytime we live rightly, we are blessed. For Esther, her blessing was favor with the king and being used to protect God’s people. As you prepare to engage students this week, consider the stand you’re taking. Is God altogether pleased with your boldness and faithfulness?
