In 2019, we’ll provide a monthly reading plan centered around our blog theme for 2019: This Is Discipleship. We wanted to go ahead and provide the October reading plan for those of you that like to print it out and have it ready for the first day of the month!
Prioritizing—we all do it. We decide on a daily, sometimes hourly basis, levels of priority for many things in our lives. Work tasks, children’s needs, our to-do lists, school work. We take our list and perform triage—which of these things is urgent, high priority? Which of them can wait a minute? Which of them can drop off the list completely?
Your prioritization often comes from your ultimate goal. If you want to get in shape, you may prioritize exercise. If your goal is to meet a deadline, you might prioritize that specific task. The point is that we naturally determine that some things are more important for right now than other things.
When it comes to the life of a disciple, it’s no different. We are to have priorities. Before you start thinking of Sunday School answers—going to church, praying, reading your Bible—let’s think about the goal of being a disciple. The goal of being a disciple is to grow in Christlikeness. We can certainly do that by going to church, praying, and reading the Bible. In fact, that is exactly how we learn to grow to be more like Christ.
In the Bible, we see example after example of God teaching His children how to prioritize Him. We are told to obey, to follow His commands, to put on the fruit of the Spirit we read about last month, and to share the gospel with others. Above all, though, we are told about God in the Bible. In order to look more like Him, we have to know who He is. Our top priority is to reflect His priorities.
This month, we’ll read passages of Scripture that teach us what to prioritize, as well as show us the character of God. As we grow in our Christlikeness, our priorities will begin to conform more and more to His.
