It’s not news that we have a refugee crisis in our world. People are fleeing Syria and other war-torn countries for religious freedom, for safety, for hope. As believers, we know that all people are made in God’s image and that He calls us to care for our neighbors (Mark 12:31), the orphans and the widows (James 1:27), and the least of these (Matt. 25:40).
We want to point out a few organizations where you can get involved in helping those around the world. This Sunday, many churches will be talking about refugees as they honor Refugee Sunday. We Welcome Refugees has information on bringing Refugee Sunday to your church.
Refugee care is not just for one Sunday a year, though. We love World Relief, an organization that cares for refugees year-round. We love that their goal is to empower local churches to serve. Not only do they care for refugees in crisis, they care for the most vulnerable around the world and show churches how to do the same. They offer many volunteer opportunities for both the church and individuals—everything from driving people from the airport to setting up apartments to helping families learn English. They have offices around the world, so it’s easy for anyone to get involved.
Look for opportunities in your community, too. In Nashville, we have clinics and charities and organizations set up to assist the vulnerable, including refugees. You may be able to tutor, donate clothes or gifts, or volunteer in other ways.
Above all, let’s pray. Pray that these people will find hope in God, peace in His promises, and comfort in His love. Pray for those caring for them here and overseas. Pray for peace in their countries. Pray, above all, that they will come to know Christ and that even this horrific situation will be used to bring Him glory.
