Women’s Ministry Question # 13: Women Reaching Women as a Bible Study?

Recently at a YOU Lead women’s leadership training, we had a panel answering questions submitted by attendees. Several past and upcoming posts address those and try to help answer them.  Click here to read other posts answering these questions.

Would the Women Reaching Women book work as a Bible study for a leadership team? IF not, any suggestions in one that would?

As a new Women’s Ministry leader 13+ years ago, Women Reaching Women was the first leadership book I read and studied. I consider it second only to the Bible in regard to wisdom in helping us begin and grow a women’s ministry and strengthen our leadership team. I continue to give the revised and expanded version of this excellent resource book to each of our new women’s ministry leaders.

In regard to a specific Bible Study, Jesus on Leadership: Developing Servant Leaders, by C. Gene Wilkes was the first Bible study we went through as a leadership team. I still recommend this study today as I train new leaders. As a team, we were able to learn leadership principles based on God’s Word as well as understand more about our individual spiritual gifts, personalities, vocational skills and life experiences that each of us brought to the team.  This understanding helped us to relate better to one another and work together more effectively as a team.

Other Bible studies that I have personally taken teams of women leaders through that I would recommend are: Spiritual Leadership: Responding to God’s Call by J Oswald Sanders and Servant Leadership: A Biblical Study for Becoming a Christlike Leader by Rhonda H. Kelley.

Other book studies I would recommend for women’s ministry teams to read together and discuss are: The Team That Jesus Built: How to Develop, Equip, and Commission a Women’s Ministry Team, by Janet Thompson, Women Leading Women, The Biblical Model for the Church by Jaye Martin and Terri Stovall, Connecting Women, A Relational Guide for Leaders in Women’s Ministry by Linda Lesnewski and Spiritual Leadership by Henry and Richard Blackaby.

These are just a few of the many excellent studies and books that have been helpful to our changing leadership team through the years. I’m sure many other women’s ministry leaders have their favorites as well. Be sure to post those studies you have done with your leadership team in the comment section below.
