Being a VBS Director in One Simple Sentence

vancleave As part of the VBS team, I love hearing about everyone’s VBS. I thought you might like a glimpse into mine. I serve as the volunteer VBS director at our small church. (I really wish there was another “label” for the amazing, God-given ministry that gets the “small church” label, but that would be a whole other blog post!)

Like a lot of churches, our VBS is in the evening after most people have put in a full day’s work at their jobs. Because of that, we start with supper (or for my friends who live elsewhere, dinner). The bonus is that we pretty much have everyone there when we are ready to start Worship Rally.

One evening I was eating my meal with one of our second graders and her Bible study teacher. This little girl was new to our church and had really connected with her teacher. As we chatted over corn dogs and chips, the little girl looked at me and blurted out, “I know what your job is!” Amused, I smiled and asked, “Really? What is it?” With a big smile she replied, “You line people up!”

Lining people up! =)

Lining people up! =)

I start grinning every time I think about her comment. I loved it! VBS at my church, your church, and churches everywhere are filled with people who do so much to make VBS happen and reach out to kids who might not otherwise connect with our churches, even if no one notices.

So to all of you who share my job of “lining people up,” and the thousand and one things that go with being a volunteer VBS director, thanks for all that you do for the Kingdom.

Foto Friday. . .Zippin Pippin

Did you know that I’m from the Memphis TN area? Did you know that I had never been to Graceland until I moved to Nashville and met my wife and took her there while we were visiting my parents? Do you know what roller coaster was Elvis Presley’s favorite? The Zippin Pippin! I got to enjoy riding the Zippin Pippin (at Libertyland) several times when I was a kid growing up in the Memphis area.

Unfortunately, Libertyland is a thing of past but thankfully, the Zippin Pippin lives on! Enjoy the video of our (Elvis and me) favorite ride!

Thank you, thank you very much!

Foto Friday. . . Graduation and VBS

Wow, what a season this is! Kids are getting out of school for the summer, graduations are happening and VBS’s are gearing up.

Speaking of graduations, I had one last night. Actually my daughter (Sadie) had her graduation last night. . .graduation from preschool! It’s was a fun and sad time for me. Here’s my baby girl, my only child, graduating from preschool and getting ready to start school!

So, I start thinking about her future teachers and how they will have an impact on her life. How they will help her learn to read, write and do arithmetic. Some of my favorite teachers were the tough ones!

I also think about her future Sunday School teachers and all that they will teach her. . .learning about our Lord and Savior, Jesus. I think back to when I taught 7th grade Sunday School and one of my first SS kids, Steven (he goes by Steve now). Steve came every Sunday and he was a great kid! He now is all grown up and has a family of his own and has a calling to help dads be more Godly.

I also start thinking about her future VBS teachers and what all they will teach her and how much of an impact they will have on her. Some of my fondest memories are from when I attended VBS at First Baptist Church, Millington. . .and when I helped teach VBS as a youth at FBC, Millington.

So, as a daddy, I would like to thank all the teachers (present and future). . .school, Sunday School and VBS teachers for taking time to encourage, love, and teach my daughter!

Thank You!

Foto Friday. . .Black & White Clip Art

In last week’s blog, Robin asked if we had the map art in a black & white (B/W) version. Well, we didn’t. . .at that time. . but now, we do! So I decided to go back and convert some of our clip art into a B/W version for today’s blog post. I just picked a few. Honestly, as I look back, I have posted quite a bit of clip art! lol!

Foto Friday…More Clip Art?

Do be do be do. . .what to do. . .for the blog today? I know. . .CLIP ART! I have fielded a few requests and heard from other people on the VBS team that the below posted clip art has been requested without the location signs on it. Well, I finally had time to “fix” the artwork (remove the logos) and decided to post it on today’s Foto Friday! Yea!

As usual, I’ll post a PNG and a JPG of the artwork. I hope you all have a blessed day!

Foto Friday…AWA Planes!

If you are wondering about the profile picture, see the bottom of the post.

Okay, okay, I know that I’ve been MIA. Sorry about that! April is traditionally a very busy month for me as I try to get all the promotional items out the door. But this April has been even crazier as a lot of us are moving offices. . .and I was one of the first one!

My office is not as easy to pack up because. . .well. . .I have a lot of toys! As you can see in one of my earlier posts. But I got it all packed and ready. . .just as the movers came to my door! :O

I’ll post photos of my new office soon! ;)

Back to the blog! As I was thinking about what to blog today, I saw some GREAT AWA plane photos on our Facebook wall that I wanted to share.

I’d like to leave you with one final fun “Keith” note. You might have noted from my “About” page and my other posts, that I’m kind of a comic book/Star Wars geek. Well, today is a fun day for me! Want to know why? heh heh!

It’s May 4th. . .May the Fourth be with You! LOL! (get it?) :P

If you are wondering about my profile picture for today, I decided to play with some of my toys one day at the office. . .I’m 2 out of the 6 Avengers (Thor and Iron Man)! And yes, I’m going to go see the movie today!

Also, don’t forget to check Katie’s blog and let us know what you are working on!

Have a bless day!

Foto Friday…AWA Accessory Photos

Wow! Is it Friday again? This week has flown by! I don’t know if you know this but April kicks off a very busy season for us on the VBS production team! Personally, I have a lot of 2013 promotional products that need to go out the door this month! :O

So today’s blog post will be a short one. The other day, Gordon posted his AWA Accessory blog and he asked for some photos! Here they are!

Our VBS 2012 Key Chains made into earrings! Wow!

Wow! She knitted that hat! See the AWA wings on the front of it? Cool!

Keep the photos coming!

Foto Friday…Idea Bank

Howdy! It’s been a while since I’ve blogged, sorry about that! I took the family to Walt Disney World for our daughter’s 5th birthday! It was a LOT of fun! Seeing the excitement in her eyes was incredible!

Now back to the blog subject. I wanted to remind you about our Idea Bank on the VBS website.

This is a section of our website where you get to share your ideas! And let me tell you. . .I’ve seen some GREAT ideas!

Here are a few ideas that caught my eye!

Peggy H had an idea for a relaxation room!

Several years ago God blessed our church with a family that has brought some really great ideas.  One of them was a relaxation room for VBS workers.  We have a couple of lady’s or a couple that are in charge of this.  The general idea is it a room that all of the workers are able to visit at a scheduled time or on a rotation depending on their job.  There are snacks and beverages for everyone.  It is a time to share some amazing stories that have happened in your group, munch out, say hi to friends, make new friends, or just relax and take a break.

Backyard Kids created a cool recruitment tower!

Found a old display booth from a car engine display, after looking at i thought it would be a great air control tower for VBS. once I got into the church I realized I couldnt store it until VBS but didn’t want to get rid of it. SO i decided to use it an advertisement for VBS recruitment.

Keep those ideas coming! And don’t forget to check out the Youth VBS blog and leave a comment (one commenter will receive a special prize)!

Also, don’t forget the Clip Art Central blog post!
