VBS 2015 Decorating Sneak Peek

thomasWho’s ready for a little sneak peek at some decorating ideas for NEXT summer’s VBS? Now, I know many people are not yet finished with Agency D3. I’m not trying to steal the thunder of this summer’s adventure to discover, decide, and defend… but I do want to give you a little taste of things to come. Hopefully you’ll get some ideas over the next few weeks of things to start watching for that might help you with next year’s adventure on your own Journey Off the Map.

Here’s a look at “Survival Springs,” the location for snacks. Kids will love sitting on giant lily pads in this serene setting.

Watch for vinyl, flannel-backed tablecloths to go on clearance at the end of the summer. The round ones make GREAT lily pads! Who wouldn’t want to float along on a giant lily pad while eating a delicious VBS snack?!?!

6 Simple Ways to Quickly Decorate for VBS

  1. Stack a few copy paper boxes or office file boxes and label each one with the words “Top Secret,” “Property of Agency D3,” or “Evidence.” Not only are file boxes ready-made decorations, they also pull double duty as easy storage for supplies.
  2. String red yarn between two hallway walls to create a maze of “laser beams” which kids have to crawl through and/or climb over.
  3. Attach sections of dryer vent hose to drape across ceiling tracks or to arc out from walls to give any room an “industrial” feel.
  4. Dust off those old computer monitors, keyboards, and old cell phones (batteries removed) and set up a “control desk” in one area of the room.
  5. Rope off restricted areas of the room with caution tape or VBS 2014 Agency D3 Investigative Tape.
  6. Hang one of the ready-to-use backdrops for Agency D3—the Supersized Backdrop (which looks like a control desk), the Super Duper Sized Backdrop (which fits together or can be used separately), or the Visual Pack posters.

Freebie Friday

Who’s ready for a giveaway??? Last week we asked you to tell us the special skills your watch would have if you were a real special agent. Your answers did not disappoint! From seeing through walls to teleporting (to get all that VBS Director work done!) to a Scripture app to a Needometer that would allow a director to know what people need, there were a ton of fun answers! Our randomly selected winner said she would record clues with her special agent watch!

This week is another great giveaway… how would you like your very own VBS 2014 Inflatable Camera?!? (Cute kid not included.)

All you need to do to enter is log in below and submit your answer to this week’s question: “What do you do with pictures taken during VBS?” Do you create any kind of keepsake for kids? Class pictures? Scrapbooks? We want to hear your great ideas!

More Decor

thomasJudging by the comments on Keith’s most recent Foto Friday blog, it seems the consensus thus far is leaning toward some kind of snack. We’ll find out for sure this Friday. In the meantime, while we all have snacks on the brain, let’s take a closer look at some ideas for decorating the snacks area of Agency D3—the break room. This one’s a fun one!

Be sure to check out the tutorial at the 1:24 mark. I’ll walk you step-by-step through the process of making screw heads out of Styrofoam balls to give your Agency D3 decorations an industrial feel. They’re so easy, yet add so much (and are incredibly inexpensive). Now that’s my kind of decoration!

Decorating for Bible Study

thomasHappy Monday! Let’s celebrate with another decorating demo!

Today’s decorating video features a sneak peek at the location for Bible Study at Agency D3—the Evidence Vault. And for all of you VBS DIYers out there, be sure to check out the technique demonstration around the 2 minute mark.

Thrift Store Challenge Results!

A few weeks ago, we posted a challenge to those out there that love VBS. Your mission? To create a gadget out of thrift store finds. We received many entries that blend seamlessly with our Agency D3 theme for 2014! You did an amazing job! Here’s a few of our favorites:

VBS Thrift Store GadgetDana Whittaker created this gadget, complete with high tech monitor, out of an easy bake oven, a few toys, PVC pipe, a Blokus game board, and some silver spray paint. Don’t you love it?!

VBS Thrift Store Gadget This lab analyzing machine came from Bethany Johnson. An old popcorn maker, spray paint, Tinker Toys, and a glow stick combined to make this final product. We’re positive the kids are going to be thrilled!

1149720_10201860190096214_833467647_o Lisa Moore shows us her skill with a metal bowl, toy microscope complete with a screen, and a light. By the time Agency D3 starts in her church, she’ll have this light flashing off of all the walls! Follow Lisa’s example for some of your own gizmos!

VBS Thrift Store Gadget One more outstanding entry came in the form of  a thrift store purchased beverage dispenser and a plastic water bottle filled with oil, water, and food coloring. Add on a few crazy straws and you’re ready for the lab!

Remember when we said we’d randomly select a winner from all of our participants? Of course you do! Well, our lucky winner of a VBS 2014 Starter Kit is Lisa Moore. Congratulations Lisa! (We used random.org to determine who would receive the prize.)

We were overwhelmed with the amazing gimmicks we received through email and Facebook posts. Thank you so much for participating! Decorating for Agency D3, as you’ve seen in prior videos and posts, can be easy and inexpensive. We hope you’ve found some inspiration today!

Worship Rally Headquarters

Ready for some more decorating ideas? The VBS 2014 Decorating Made Easy book (available Oct. 1 in the Jump Start Kit) is packed with ideas from the basic to the elaborate, but today I wanted to give you something you won’t find in the book. Just for you, faithful blog readers… here and nowhere else. Are you ready?

worshiprallyscreen

This is the art created for the giant screen in our Worship Rally set. It’s designed to look like a bank of monitors for a high tech workstation suitable for the Agency D3 HQ. One simple way to decorate is to project this image on a free-standing screen, with a banquet table (or 3) positioned in front. Raise the back legs of the table(s) and cover the tabletop(s) with old joysticks, keyboards, calculators, buttons, gears, etc. like a giant control panel.

thomasHow are you doing on your National Thrift Store Day challenge? Check out Friday’s post from Courtney to find out the details of the challenge and how you could win a VBS 2014 Starter Kit of your choice! To kick-start your creativity and maybe give you a few ideas, let me show you what we did with a few thrift store finds of our own.

This “cone of silence”/domed fixture was a prominent feature of our decorations for The Lab (crafts rotation). Check out this video walk-thru and see how many more “thrift store finds” you can spot! Come on, super sleuths, you can do this!

I scream, you scream, we all scream for VBS??

katie2aIf you’ve been around kids for any amount of time, you know they can be LOUD!  What’s more fun than to be a little loud during VBS?

This year, make sure you don’t miss these super fun Screamer Balloons.  They’re long balloons that make a crazy “screaming” noise when you let the air out!

Check out this funny video of some of our LifeWay Kids team trying them out for the first time.
