Today’s decorating video features a sneak peek at the location for Bible Study at Agency D3—the Evidence Vault. And for all of you VBS DIYers out there, be sure to check out the technique demonstration around the 2 minute mark.

A few weeks ago, we posted a challenge to those out there that love VBS. Your mission? To create a gadget out of thrift store finds. We received many entries that blend seamlessly with our Agency D3 theme for 2014! You did an amazing job! Here’s a few of our favorites:
This lab analyzing machine came from Bethany Johnson. An old popcorn maker, spray paint, Tinker Toys, and a glow stick combined to make this final product. We’re positive the kids are going to be thrilled!
Lisa Moore shows us her skill with a metal bowl, toy microscope complete with a screen, and a light. By the time Agency D3 starts in her church, she’ll have this light flashing off of all the walls! Follow Lisa’s example for some of your own gizmos!
One more outstanding entry came in the form of a thrift store purchased beverage dispenser and a plastic water bottle filled with oil, water, and food coloring. Add on a few crazy straws and you’re ready for the lab!
Remember when we said we’d randomly select a winner from all of our participants? Of course you do! Well, our lucky winner of a VBS 2014 Starter Kit is Lisa Moore. Congratulations Lisa! (We used random.org to determine who would receive the prize.)
We were overwhelmed with the amazing gimmicks we received through email and Facebook posts. Thank you so much for participating! Decorating for Agency D3, as you’ve seen in prior videos and posts, can be easy and inexpensive. We hope you’ve found some inspiration today!
Ready for some more decorating ideas? The VBS 2014 Decorating Made Easy book (available Oct. 1 in the Jump Start Kit) is packed with ideas from the basic to the elaborate, but today I wanted to give you something you won’t find in the book. Just for you, faithful blog readers… here and nowhere else. Are you ready?
This is the art created for the giant screen in our Worship Rally set. It’s designed to look like a bank of monitors for a high tech workstation suitable for the Agency D3 HQ. One simple way to decorate is to project this image on a free-standing screen, with a banquet table (or 3) positioned in front. Raise the back legs of the table(s) and cover the tabletop(s) with old joysticks, keyboards, calculators, buttons, gears, etc. like a giant control panel.

How are you doing on your National Thrift Store Day challenge? Check out Friday’s post from Courtney to find out the details of the challenge and how you could win a VBS 2014 Starter Kit of your choice! To kick-start your creativity and maybe give you a few ideas, let me show you what we did with a few thrift store finds of our own.
This “cone of silence”/domed fixture was a prominent feature of our decorations for The Lab (crafts rotation). Check out this video walk-thru and see how many more “thrift store finds” you can spot! Come on, super sleuths, you can do this!
Tomorrow, Saturday, August 17 is National Thrift Store Day! Of course I’m sure you all already had that marked on your calendars. To celebrate, we thought we would have a little fun and give away a VBS 2014 Starter Kit of your choice.
If you’ve checked out our theme release video for Agency D3, you know that we used a lot of thrift store items in our decorating. We went around to our local thrift stores and bought all the interesting shapes we could find. Almost anything combined with a few other items can be spray painted to look like high tech decorating items.
Here’s how one of our items started:
So here’s our celebratory challenge:
- Collect random items from your local thrift store
- Combine them to create one awesome Agency D3 gadget
- Upload a photo of your gadget on our Facebook page or email your photo to me at email@example.com
- Post by Friday, August 23, and we will randomly pick a winner. To see Terms & Conditions, click here.
I’m not sure if you noticed, but we will pick the winner randomly, so don’t be intimidated to post! Plus, who doesn’t love getting inspiration for VBS? To see a few other gadgets we created from thrift store items, click here.
How many preschoolers in your church know how to swipe mom and dad’s iPad until they find their game? The weekend after we developed the content and theme for Agency D3 I visited my family. My sister-in-law arrived with her sweet 2 year old who was carrying iPad in hand (in a very stout protective case, of course… and I must say it was almost as big as he was). Shelby knew how to swipe to his favorite games or how to launch the movie he had been watching in the car, and he was only two! That moment, I knew that preschoolers of all ages were going to love Agency D3!
At VBS last summer, I was so impressed with the ability of the Babies-2s group to seek and find what I asked them to find and repeat back to me the truths that I taught. As preschoolers interact with sensory elements, discover Bible story pictures under water or shaving cream mats, and seek and find pictures and obejects at Agency D3, I know they will have an experience learning about Jesus that they will remember!
As a teacher, decorations with shiny surfaces, bright colors, and interactive screens will engage a preschooler. You could even create a sensory wall of shiny, sticky, carpeted, and textured surfaces to make your room high-tech and a ton of fun for kids! Be creative as balloons can become a wall of big buttons or gauges and a row of push lights become a monitoring gadget. Preschoolers are going to love interacting with the different decorations at Agency D3.
Not only will the theme connect, but the Bible content sets up a firm foundation for our preschoolers to build upon for the rest of their lives. As we discuss who Jesus is and what He did, preschoolers will learn the basics about why we want to love and follow Jesus. I am so excited about the activities and learning that is going to happen with our youngest agents at Agency D3!
What is the most exciting thing about Agency D3 to you? What do you think will be a preschooler’s favorite part?
Even though you’re still working on VBS 2013, we want to give you a chance to think ahead. As you brainstorm VBS 2014, consider resources and props you may be able to save to transform them into something for your Agency headquarters.
Notice the corrugated table in the first shot? You might recognize it from our 2013 Cotton Candy Cafe set! Many of the “high tech” gadgets you see were created from things we found at thrift shops!
This week, we’re shooting photos and video for our VBS 2014 catalog and promo videos. If you’re already excited about Agency D3, stay tuned for more sneak peeks!
If there’s one thing we know you’re doing right now, it’s looking for inspiration! VBS is seriously just around the corner. We’re really excited about all the great sharing and conversations going on on our Facebook wall, but we know VBSers are active on Pinterest, too!
We’re doing our best to find what you’re pinning and pin it to our board so that our followers can see what you’re up to. Be sure to check out the TONS of ideas VBSers have posted online!
