"When I picked this book up I simply could not put it down. So many emotions ran through me as I read it I struggle even now to find the right words to describe them. Grief. Sadness. Despair. Tragedy. Heartbroken. Thankful. Blessed. Wisdom. Perseverance. Hope! Yes, there is hope on the other side of suicide and it is found in Christ and the rock solid promises of His Word. This was a painful book for my friend Frank Page to write. But, it is a book that will minister to thousands of souls who have walked the dark path of death to find there is light and life on the other side. This book is brutal in it’s honesty. That is why it is so powerful. Thank you my friend for opening up your heart. Melissa’s death is not in vain."

I. Packer (Crossway. 9781433536830. Hardback. $14.99)

“Dr. Packer has written a wonderful book about 2 Corinthians that illuminates the varied and various connections between the gospel of Jesus Christ and the Christian life; the power of the gospel and the weakness of the Christian; faith and money; and the present and the future. The exposition that this Christian statesman presents is informed first of all by a penetrating interpretation of the text of Scripture and a consistent theological and Christocentric focus, but also by examples from his own rich life and much else, ranging from C. S. Lewis to cartoons and films. Every Christian should read this book.”

"Writing with a clarity that comes from a lifetime of reflection, Oliver O’Donovan here gives us an account of practical reason that shows why and how ethics is at the beginning, middle, and end of a theological work. I suspect this book is destined to become a classic because few authors are as capable as O’Donovan in combining wisdom and erudition. We are in his debt."

Daniel L. Akin, President, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary

—

“Stunning. Heart-wrenching. Gospel-centered. Breathtaking. I am struggling to articulate exactly what I want to say about this book. Frank Page raises a troubled child. He goes through the heartbreak of numerous issues with her. Then, when her life seemed to be on the mend, she learns she has cancer. Ultimately and tragically, even after the battle with cancer is won, she takes her life. As a father, I cannot begin to imagine the pain Frank and his wife, Dayle, are experiencing. As a reader, I know that I have seen God’s grace and love poured out abundantly through this book. Simply stated, this book is one of the most powerful I’ve ever read.”

Thom S. Rainer, President and CEO, LifeWay Christian Resources

—

“Never again will I see Frank Page the same way. Never again will I see anyone the same way. Melissa opens the heart of a leader to the love, pain, hope, despair, joy, sorrow, and ultimate peace that God in His providence allows. He invites us all in to this very tender place. He does not hide the most personal reflections and feelings. And he does it for our sakes. You will weep. You will smile. You will thank God for His peace. And you will keep this book on hand to give to those who must walk a similarly lonely road. Thank you Frank Page for capturing your sorrow for our edification.”

Paige Patterson, President, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary

—

“Painful . . . Poignant . . . Penetrating . . . Powerful. These words, along with a host of other moving and emotional descriptors continually came to mind as I was turning the pages in this transparent portrayal of the struggles faced by Frank Page and his family following the suicide of his adult daughter, Melissa. Anything but a simplistic "how to" manual for dealing with grief and loss, Frank Page walks us through the reality of his struggles in an authentic manner that allows the readers to experience with him the hurts that accompany such a traumatic interruption in one’s life and family. The, book, however is not just the telling of a personal story. Rather, it is a pastoral and fatherly reflection, grounded in the love and mercy of God as revealed in Holy Scripture, intended to provide guidance for families and individuals who have walked down the paths of sorrow that the author himself has walked. Even beyond this valuable contribution, the book offers helpful and wise counsel in a tender, compassionate, and hopeful way for those struggling with doubt, depression, disillusionment and thoughts of suicide. I am truly grateful for Frank Page’s courageous efforts to write this powerful book. Without a doubt, this work was hard for him to write . . . and, at times, it is a hard book to read. Yet, it is a book that needed to be written and, moreover, a book that needs to be read.”

David S. Dockery, President, Union University

—

“From the heart of a Christian father comes a most remarkable and unforgettable account of the life of his daughter and the reality of suicide. We are all in debt to Frank Page for sharing his generous, grieving, and deeply convictional heart as he tells this story and helps us all to give thanks for the gift of life, even as we seek to celebrate and cherish this gift – and especially the gift of our children.

In reading through a new Oxford University Press title over the weekend, I came across this quote and thought I’d pass it along.

In 1907, a Dallas Morning News editorial ranked the “Library Book Thief” as “probably the meanest thief God ever let live” on Earth. “The person who takes advantage of a collection of books maintained by the decent people of a city, under universal tax for the benefit of all, and steals a volume that better people need” is enough “to make fallen angels weep.” It went on to note that “God is supposed to know everything, maybe he knows why such people exist—but no one else does. Perhaps these people—like the dog poisoners, whom they resemble—cumber the earth merely to teach humility to those who are apt sometimes to think too complacently of human nature as she degenerates in the crowd.

Marty (Bethany House. 9780764210839. Paperback. $12.99)

Life in our high-tech, fast-paced society places modern readers of the Bible at an extreme disadvantage when they seek to understand the biblical backdrop behind the story. Dr. Bill Marty solves that! His careful but plain explanation of The World of Jesus is a gift to everyone who desires a rich grasp of Scripture. Keep this close when you study the Bible and you will not be disappointed.

Echoes of Eden: Reflections on Christianity, Literature, and the Arts by Jerram Barrs (Crossway. 9781433535970. Paperback. $17.99)

“Echoes of Eden is the most accessible, readable, and yet theologically robust work on Christianity and the arts that you will be able to find. It is biblical, theologically sound, filled with examples, and edifying. It anticipates and answers well all the most common questions that evangelical people ask about the arts. I highly recommend it.”

Imitating God in Christ: Recapturing a Biblical Pattern by Jason B. Hood (IVP Academic. 9780830827107. Paperback. $22.00)

“Jason Hood, in this well-written and well-crafted volume, has presented readers with a powerful and persuasive call to reconsider what it truly means for Christians to be imitators of God in Christ. Hood calls for the church to recover the important and oft-neglected scriptural teaching regarding the historical practice of imitation in order to bring about authentic Christ-centered discipleship and cross-shaped sanctification. In doing so, he winsomely points his readers toward renewal, faithfulness, Christlikeness and godliness, not as a grueling duty, but as a delightful destiny. I am hopeful for and enthusiastic about Hood’s proposal and pray that it receives the wide readership and response it deserves.”

Formed for the Glory of God: Learning from the Spiritual Practices of Jonathan Edwards by Kyle Strobel (IVP Books. 9780830856534. Paperback. $16.00)

“We sometimes imagine that spiritual formation–the Spirit’s work of conforming us to the image of God’s Son–is something accomplished on our own. But in reality, God has graciously given us the gift of teachers and the community of saints. These wise guides can lead us and help us, through their teaching and example, pointing us to Christ. We could not ask for a more profound guide than the great theologian Jonathan Edwards. In these pages his gifted interpreter Kyle Strobel shows us a better way–a way less traveled–for how to live the Christian life bound to the Son in love.

Paperback. $22.00)

"Jason Hood, in this well-written and well-crafted volume, has presented readers with a powerful and persuasive call to reconsider what it truly means for Christians to be imitators of God in Christ. I am hopeful for and enthusiastic about Hood’s proposal and pray that it receives the wide readership and response it deserves."

Schuurman (IVP Academic. 9780830827138. Paperback. $18.00)

"Schuurman’s book is a rare jewel: rare because it is unusual to find genuinely helpful and insightful material on a Christian approach to computer science, a jewel because the author combines impeccable credentials as an engineer with wide reading in history, theology and philosophy to produce a readable and insightful treatment of the topic. I recommend it highly."

Paperback. $16.00)

"We sometimes imagine that spiritual formation–the Spirit’s work of conforming us to the image of God’s Son–is something accomplished on our own. A feast awaits all those with eyes to see."

Paperback. $20.00)

“Encountering Jesus, Encountering Scripture is part bombshell, part pastoral epistle. . . . Both Kierkegaard and Crump have a way of chopping a path through all the brush of hermeneutical debates and academic wrangling about historical criticism to remind us of a simple but still disconcerting truth — that the point of Scripture is to encounter Jesus. . . . Students and other interpreters need to read this book to be reminded that what’s at stake in biblical studies is an encounter with the Lover of our souls.” — from the foreword, James K. A. Smith

Paperback. $34.00)

Contributors: Os Guinness, Michael S. Horton, Richard Lints, Bruce McCormack, Mark Noll, J. I. Packer, Gary Parrett, Rodney Peterson, Cornelius Plantinga, Tite Tienou, Kevin J. Vanhoozer, Adonis Vidu, Miroslav Volf.

“Projecting from earlier work by David Wells, Mark Noll, and Cornelius Plantinga, this important collection of essays attempts to prescribe the way forward for the disparate movement called evangelicalism. This is not the sort of book that marshals a wide swath of readers to agree with everything it says; rather, it is so consistently stimulating and provocative that no reader will agree with everything and all readers will come away with horizons enlarged and understanding deepened. Ignore this book and you will be impoverished; wrestle with it and you will be enriched.” —D. A. Carson. Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

Messages that Move: How to Give Bible Talks That Challenge and Inspire by Tim Hawkins (The Good Book Company. 9781908762375. Paperback. $16.99)

“I wish I’d read this book when I started preaching 25 years ago. It provides the reader with an extremely helpful methodology, with which to go about the overwhelming task of teaching the Bible to real people.” - Rico Tice, Evangelist and founder of Christianity Explored

Serving Without Sinking: How to Serve Christ and Keep Your Joy by John Hindley (The Good Book Company. 9781908762351. Paperback. $12.99)

“Serving without Sinking is a remarkable book by church-planter and first-time author John Hindley. With a disarming personal honesty and devastating aplomb, he diagnoses the rotten motivations that so commonly fuel Christian life and service, and shows how Christians can serve Christ with joy instead of resentment, reluctance or burn-out. I’m not aware of another book that manages to combine so much insight with such sheer, fun readability. All in all, it makes for a uniquely useful book for any Christian who is weary, bruised, or proud.”
- Michael Reeves, Head of Theology, UCCF

Howard (The Good Book Company. 9781908317735. Paperback. $12.99)

“The author (Bernard to some, Nick to others), has done a brilliant job of presenting and applying here much of the seminal work of O. Palmer Robertson, whose book The Christ of the Covenants remains a key text for many theological students, but is indigestible to most at over 300 pages!” - Tim Thornborough, from the Preface

Hardback. $19.99)

Arriving in stores early next week.

The second coming of Christ is a matter of significant disagreement amongst Christians. Many hold to premillennialism: that Christ’s return will be followed by 1,000 years before the final judgment, a belief popularized in the popular Left Behind novels. However, premillennialism is not the only option for Christians. Sam Storms provides a biblical rationale for amillennialism, the belief that 1,000 years mentioned in the book of Revelation is symbolic with the emphasis being the King and his Kingdom.

Arriving in stores early next week.

“If I could, I would make this little book mandatory reading for seminarians everywhere, and then urge them to read it a couple more times during the course of their ministry. It avoids cutesy and manipulative suggestions, and makes its practical points while urging integrity, faithfulness, and imagination. Many books on preaching are published every year; this one is a “must.” —D. A. Carson, Research Professor of New Testament, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School
