The book Tim Keller says every seminarian should read (you might be surprised)

The day after Thanksgiving, pick up a copy of The Jesus Storybook Bible by Sally-Lloyd Jones for only $5.00 at your local LifeWay Christian Store. (UPDATE – even though Thanksgiving has passed – you can still get this book at LifeWay for 50% off retail through Christmas).

Tim Keller, Pastor of Redeemer Church in New York City, says:

“I would urge not just families with young children to get this book, but every Christian – from pew warmers, to ministry leaders, seminarians and even theologians! Sally Lloyd-Jones has captured the heart of what it means to find Christ in all the scriptures, and has made clear even to little children that all God’s revelation has been about Jesus from the beginning – a truth not all that commonly recognized even among the very learned.”

What’s new to “New Academic?”

Every Good Endeavor: Connecting Your Work to God’s Work by Timothy Keller.

In a work world that is increasingly competitive and insecure, people often have nagging questions: Why am I doing this work? Why is it so hard? And is there anything I can do about it?

Tim Keller, pastor of New York’s Redeemer Presbyterian Church and New York Times bestselling author of The Reason for God has taught and counseled students, young professionals, and senior leaders on the subject of work and calling for more than twenty years. Now he puts his insights into a book for readers everywhere, giving biblical perspectives on such pressing questions as:

  • What is the purpose of work?
  • How can I find meaning and serve customers in a cutthroat, bottom-line-oriented workplace?
  • How can I use my skills in a vocation that has meaning and purpose?
  • Can I stay true to my values and still advance in my field?
  • How do I make the difficult choices that must be made in the course of a successful career?

With deep insight and often surprising advice, Keller shows readers that biblical wisdom is immensely relevant to our questions about our work. In fact, the Christian view of work—that we work to serve others, not ourselves—can provide the foundation of a thriving professional and balanced personal life. Keller shows how excellence, integrity, discipline, creativity, and passion in the workplace can help others and even be considered acts of worship—not just of self-interest.

Tim Keller is founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City.

Theologian Trading Cards by Norman Jeune III.

Patterned after the all-American baseball card, Theologian Trading Cards provide essential information about the major teachers, leaders, and trouble-makers throughout the history of the Church. At a glance you will have access to information regarding 288 important figures in church history, including when and where they lived, their contribution to the church, and enduring significance.

Each figure has been placed on the roster of one of 15 “theological” or “historical” teams; this aids readers in discovering the practical, chronological, and theological connections between figures. Examples include the Orthodoxy Dodgers (heretics); St. James Padres (Church Fathers of the Patristic Era); and the Wittenberg Whistle-blowers (Early Reformers and later Lutheran Church).

Theologian Trading Cards are perfect for students taking a church history course who want a memorable study aid to help them retain important information about select individuals in the church, as well as non-students who just want to learn or want to begin a hobby of card collecting.

First edition of Broadus’ classic book back in print

First published in 1870, John A. Broadus’ On the Preparation and Delivery of Sermons has long been a standard text in homiletical courses. After going through many revisions over the years, the first edition is now back in print. SBTS Press has republished the first edition under the conviction that it is far superior to later revisions since it most accurately reflects Broadus’ own vision of preaching and reflects his commitment “to the exposition of the Bible, and to a grammatical and historical method of biblical interpretation” (from the Foreword).

Currently, the book is available in the LifeWay Campus Store at SBTS.
