I’m so thrilled to welcome Sadie to the blog today! How cool is it that we are the host of her first blog post?
How cool is this to be writing a blog! I’ve had the opportunity to do a lot of things, but I haven’t written for a blog yet, so this is cool. The word blog is just weird, isn’t it? So weird that I had to look it up. I discovered that blog is short for two words-web log. That sort of makes sense, right? I guess the next question would be: What’s a log? A log is like a diary or a journal. So now we both know what a blog is–journaling on the internet. Good enough for me. Now, on to more important things.
I’m excited to be able to use this blog to talk about my devotional book, Live Original Devotional. Staying in God’s Word every day is important to me and, just like you, I get busy and tired and distracted and sometimes put Bible study on the back burner, as Mamaw Kay says. That means to put it on the back row of your life and not think about it.
But, I don’t want my time with God to ever be on the back burner. I want it on the front row all the time. But that’s hard. If you’re a normal teen, you are busy with friends, homework, sports, family activities, youth group events, and on and on. In my Live Original Devotional, I wanted to give teens and young women a way to put God’s Word into their lives in two ways: first, and most important, I wanted to encourage them to read Scripture; and second, I wanted to encourage them by pairing Scripture with some real life events I have been though to help Scripture come to life.
For many years now, I have preached my “Live Original” message. My dad nicknamed me “the original” when I was about five, because I loved to stand on the brick in front of the fireplace and preach to my family. He would walk past me and think, She’s a little strange, but to my face he would say, “You’re an original.” I guess that “original” word made an impact on me because it has become a message I want to share with anyone who will listen. Being original means being one of a kind. God created you and me to be one of a kind. Even if you have a twin, you and your twin are not exactly alike. I think it’s amazing and astonishing how God can keep putting babies out there who are so unique, so special, and so different. We just added a new cousin to our big family and, sure enough, he doesn’t look just like anyone else in our family. He’s got some similar traits, but there’s no doubt, he is an original.
I think God delights in making us all different. I can imagine Him working on His next creation, the next baby to be born, and carefully choosing the eye and hair color combination and then adding how tall they will be and what talents they will have. Think how much care and attention you give to picking out an outfit for a special big event, and then multiply that by millions, and you might get close to understanding how carefully God chose everything about you. If God took so much time to make you exactly like you are, why would you want to be anything else?
I truly believe that living your own God-designed life is the key to a happier and holier life. But how can you know God’s plan for your life if you never talk to Him or listen to Him? How can God lead and direct your steps if you don’t have a relationship with Him? How can you be comfortable with how God made you if you’re not comfortable with who God is?
My prayer is that some story or scripture I share in Live Original Devotional will be beneficial to you. And I pray that you’ll walk away from this book with a clearer understanding of who you are and what your purpose on this earth is.
I certainly don’t have all the answers. I just happen to love and follow the One who does.
Have a blessed week.
Keep living your original life,
