The importance of grandparents
Stormie Omartian has been teaching us about prayer for many years now through her popular Power of Praying Series. She has recently released a very special book in this series, The Power of a Praying Grandparent. Today, more than ever, grandmothers and grandfathers have an ever increasing role in the lives of their families. There are so many ways that they can help strengthen the family unit and bring a solid spiritual foundation to their growing grandkids. Here’s a look at Stormie’s new book:
You have raised your children and now know the incredible joy of welcoming their children into your life. Being a grandparent is one of God’s greatest gifts. And loving and caring for your grandchildren not only blesses you but is also honoring to God. The best way to love your grandchildren is to pray for them.
In The Power of a Praying® Grandparent, bestselling author and speaker Stormie Omartian offers powerful suggestions to help you do just that as you
- pray for your grandchildren to be healthy, protected, smart, kind, wise, godly, and obedient so that they do not stray into enemy territory
- pray for yourself to be a powerful praying Grandma or Grandpa who understands what your grandchildren are facing in this world today and how you can best cover them spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically
- pray for your grandchildren’s parents to be led and enabled by God so they can be the wisest, most patient, and loving parents for their children
Being a praying grandmother or grandfather is not only one of the best gifts you can give your grandchildren, but their parents as well.

The Power of a Praying Grandparent
When I found out I was going to be a grandparent, I immediately thanked God for this miracle and amazing answer to my countless prayers. First of all, I was thankful that our son had found a wonderful wife. From the time he was born, I had prayed that God would give bring into our son’s life the perfect wife for him. God answered those prayers in the most perfect way, because his beautiful wife has been the greatest blessing to our family. She told us of how she was diagnosed with bone cancer when she was eleven and was in the hospital for a year with many chemotherapy infusions, along with multiple surgeries to replace bones in her leg. It was a miracle she lived, especially when many in the children’s hospital who were also suffering with her same condition did not make it.
After the Make-a-Wish Foundation had granted her wish, she finally went into remission and has now passed the ten-year mark of full recovery. However, no doctor could give her any guarantee that she would ever be able to get pregnant. At that time there weren’t enough children with her condition who lived long enough to determine what the chances were of being able to conceive. No one could say for certain, except God, so we prayed that she would be able to have a baby.
About a year after my son and daughter-in-law were married, they announced to our family that they were expecting. We all were ecstatic and literally jumped up and down for joy. It was, once again, the answer to countless prayers. But with that news came new concerns about whether she would be able to carry and deliver a healthy baby. We prayed fervently every day about that, but I soon gained peace that God does not do a partial healing; He heals completely. So in my prayers I thanked Him for that. God answered all of our prayers because our grandchild was born healthy and strong.
The first time I held my precious granddaughter was not many minutes after she was born, and I knew a part of my heart was going to be with her forever. I also deeply sensed that I had a big responsibility to pray for her as long as I was on this earth. I would soon learn how important that call of God is.
Over the next two years (and the addition of another granddaughter), I have learned that there are so many things to pray about for our grandchildren. They will face a world that we could not even imagine when we had our own children. There is far more evil manifesting boldly than what we dealt with at their age, and it is becoming increasingly dangerous and threatening. Our grandchildren may face things we cannot even think to pray about. Only God knows the future, and by His Spirit we can be led to pray specifically and according to His will.
The good news is that there is an inheritance we can leave our grandchildren that is more valuable than possessions, and that is a spiritual inheritance that comes from living God’s way and praying often for them, especially that they be established on the solid foundation that is found only in a close walk with Jesus. I have found that praying for our grandchildren is not only a nice thing to do—it is a mandate from God.
I wrote The Power of a Praying Grandparent to help other grandparents pray powerfully for the most important aspects of each grandchild’s life. It includes prayers for your grandchild’s safety, healing, influences, relationship with God, protection from evil, ability to receive God’s love and reject the world’s idols, and faith to believe that—with God—all things are possible.
In this book are prayers for yourself to be the best praying grandparent you can be. This means asking God to help you be a great role model for your grandchildren, and to be able to communicate your love for them in ways they can clearly perceive. There are also prayers for your grandchildren’s parents to be able to raise their children well and according to the will of God. In fact, one of the most powerful ways to pray for your grandchildren is to pray for their parents. The pressure on parents these days is enormous. They desperately need our prayer support as they raise our grandchildren—whether they realize it or not.
We grandparents have a great purpose for being here in this time and place, and that is to pray for our grandchildren. Who knows what great things God will do—or prevent—because of our prayers.
