‘Tis the season! The anticipation in the air is unmistakable. Students and their parents are cautiously excited. Teachers and administrators are exhausted, yet eager to begin. The birth of a new school year is quickly approaching. Will you be ready?

As your family makes plans to begin, strive to ensure that your child is prepared in every aspect of development: academic, physical, emotional, and spiritual. Likewise, make it your goal as a parent to put good organizational skills into practice.

As teachers frantically work to prepare their lesson plans for the upcoming school year, parents can also strategize. Any good lesson plan contains worthwhile objectives, helpful materials and successful outcomes. Consider the following suggestions to put your own plan into action.

Objective: Academic Preparation

  • Keep minds active in the summer. The easiest way to do this? Read! Make sure that your child reads and is read to often throughout the summer.
  • During your summer vacation, plan meaningful educational excursions. Visit museums, historical places, and locations your child has never been. Provide a variety of learning experiences. To document summer happenings and to maintain writing skills, encourage journal writing.
  • Review math facts and spelling throughout the summer. Keep the knowledge fresh and ready to go when the school bells ring.
  • Meet with your child’s teacher, especially if there are circumstances that require special attention. Find out whether the teacher prefers to communicate by phone, e-mail, or written note.

The rest of this week, we’ll hit on physical, emotional, and spiritual preparation, as well as some practical checklists.

When is back-to-school in your neck of the woods? Our public schools started today, but thankfully the private school my husband teaches at still has two weeks! – Jessie
