An Invitation to Philadelphia

Kyle Canty

Kyle Canty is the P2 Missions City Rep.  More than that he is a Disciple of Christ, Husband, Father, Life Long Student, and Aspiring Blogger.  He has grown up in Philly.  The passion he has for his city is contagious and his favorite local eatery is  Pagano’s Steaks on Ogontz Avenue.  “Steaks so thick that it takes an average size human at least two meals to finish!”

It’s no secret that Philadelphia is teeming with opportunities for ministry. Upon arriving in the nation’s fifth largest city, you’ll notice the diverse communities. It’s hard to resist the bold ‘in your face’ style that Philly is known for.  Philadelphia is not simply a midway point between Washington, D.C. and New York.  It is a unique place where art, history, music, culture, food and humanity intersect to form a place unlike any city you’ve ever visited before. I would like to invite you to this place I call home.

Philadelphia is a city for church planters. Ever since former slave Richard Allen planted the first African Methodist Episcopal church in Philadelphia in 1794, this great city has been on the map as a place where unique and amazing ministry can happen. The diverse churches and planters in Philadelphia each bring to the table their own unique insight and giftedness to reach their communities with the good news of Jesus Christ.  In these communities there are opportunities to meet young and old, black and white, Asian and Latino, rich and poor with the life changing story of our Savior.

Students are welcome to see what God is already doing on the ground in Philly as planters and established churches work to fulfill both the Great Commission and the Great Commandment. Maybe you would love to engage elementary school children with face painting, or hook a passerby with a puppet show or drama on a city corner? How about helping a church planter restore a dilapidated building by removing rubble or helping an elderly homeowner living on a fixed income with a nasty leak that she can’t afford to fix on her own?  Yes, tangible expressions of Christ’s love—this is what people need in our communities and this is where students can be a big help.

Opportunities for service in 2014 are wide open and the possibilities are almost endless.  How will you be used by God to reach churches in the Greater Philadelphia or Neptune, NJ areas for Christ? There are opportunities to reach people in need through a P2 Missions trip throughout June or July (see our schedule at or through World Changers during the weeks of July 5-12 or 14-19 ( If you would like to bring your group to Philadelphia outside of the dates planned, we can customize a project specifically for your team.   Contact or call 1-800-254-2022 for more information.
