Baby Dedication Resources

May 8, 2013 By kstorts 1 Comment

klistaThis Sunday is Mother’s Day.  I know – not a newsflash. But I want to talk about another big event that often takes place on this important day — Baby Dedication.  Or, as I really like to call it – Parent-Child Dedication.

I prefer that title because this service can be so much more than an opportunity to announce the birth of a child! I worry sometimes that parents participate in a dedication service because they get caught up in the excitement of showing off their new little one. What my hope for that young family is that this will be a celebration of life but also a time of solemn commitment where the parents pledge to be and do all they can to raise that child and help her to be all God wants her to be.

This day can also be a great reminder to your church congregation of their responsibility of surrounding that new family. A time, where we as church members realize that we’re to come alongside and mentor, support, and advise when we can and assist in teaching and guiding their children.

There are so many great ways to celebrate this commitment.  I’ve seen:

  • Services where all families with babies born during the past year were committed on one day;
  • Services where each child is celebrated and dedicated on his own unique Sunday;
  • Services on Saturday night;
  • Parent Brunches;
  • Older siblings dedicated, who for various reasons had not participated in a service before;
  • and so much more!

Here are four resources from pastors who have unique ways that their churches have performed this service.

If you have a special way you celebrate this service in your ministry, please share a comment with us! Although it may be too late for this year’s Mother’s Day, you might give someone a great idea for a future date!

Blessings, friends!

A creative space for Kids Ministry brainstorming!

May 3, 2013 By Courtney Baker 2 Comments

Courtney Baker

Earlier this year, our team here at LifeWay decided we wanted to add a little excitement to our floor. That sounded like the perfect project for Pam and me, so we started a project that would take us much longer to finish than we ever imagined, but the result was worth all the patience it took for us to see this project come to life.

Here’s how Pam and I like to start….with a clean slate.

Pam and Me Blank

However, that is not how it was for this project. I’m sure many of you also have to work with what you are giving, and that was certainly the case with this project. We had some great book shelves, but we had a lot of random stuff on them. Our first objective was to get some great artwork on the walls. If you’ve seen our LifeWay Kids catalog, you might recognize the art.

Artwork

Next we decided on a pretty strict color pallet, tangerine, surf, grass green, and black & white. We then decided to take all the random stuff on the shelves and paint it all with chalkboard paint. Take this Ship’s Wheel from a previous year of CentriKid Camps.

Or this globe…

There are a lot more super random objects. See if you can spy the following:
- Bobble head
- Skateboard
- Football
- Trophy
- Viewfinder
- Clock
- Bowling Pin

If you want to take on a similar project here’s a few tools we found really helpful:
- Chalkboard spray paint
- Chalkboard Paint
- Goodwill
- A good dose of patience
Here’s a few pictures of the finished space:

If you’re looking for some great artwork, we’d be glad to send you the image for our catalog cover. We mounted ours on foam board, but there are lots of ways to utilize it. Just leave a comment here, and we’ll connect with you.

Grief in Times of Crisis

April 10, 2013 By kstorts 1 Comment

Today, we welcome guest blogger Linda Ranson Jacobs, DC4K Creator and Ambassador, who shares great wisdom on helping kids and families in crisis.

To a child aLinda Ranson Jacobs crisis is a crisis is a crisis. It makes no difference the cause of the crisis or what the crisis is. To a child it becomes a world turned upside down where everything feels unsafe, out of control and confusing. What does make a difference is the reaction, interaction, care and attention of the adults surrounding the child.

When the trauma is very large, like natural disaster, a school shooting or other events that get national attention on TV expect the impact to be widespread and long lasting. When the trauma is individual like a death of someone close or a divorce, the impact is still devastating to the individuals involved and many times it is longer lasting.

We have heard for years that children are resilient, “Oh your kids will get over it. Children are resilient.” What we now know through research is that children are resilient when they have a support system surrounding them. When that support system can’t be the family or extended family, the church family needs to be available. This is true for the death of a loved one, for the divorcing family and for exposure to tragic events in the community or nationally.

Children’s emotional reaction to a crisis depends on their developmental level and on their experience with the people involved. Here are a few universal reactions:

  • Increased demands for attention
  • Isolation
  • Scared fearful/anxious
  • Overactive/silliness
  • Clingy, overly dependent on the adults around them
  • Attempt to order world
  • Crying, withdrawal
  • Regression (Baby talk, toileting, need to sleep with toys or blankets given up long ago)
  • Quietness or lack of emotion
  • Complaint of pain (They may hurt physically with stomach aches; headaches, etc.)
  • Difficulty in concentration/focus

For grieving children, they will take breaks from the grieving process. That’s why you see little children running and playing at the gravesite after a funeral. Children are children and they have a need to play and make things feel normal.

Here are some tips to give parents when there is a community tragedy in their area.

  • Do not talk to other adults about the tragedy in front of your children. Children don’t understand speculation.
  • Try to keep yourself calm. Kids WILL pick up on your anxieties. Children need to know and feel they are safe.
  • Parents please do not hug your child fiercely every time you see them. They may not fully comprehend all that has happened;  however, they will pick up on your fretfulness.
  • At a calm moment sit down with your children and ask them what they know about the event. Ask them what they want to know. Explain things in as calm a voice as you can.
  • Don’t lie to your children. When they ask you why this happened, tell them you don’t know. If they ask why God would allow this to happen, tell them God did not want this to happen and He wants them to be safe. Sometimes bad people do bad things.
  • Ask your children to pray with you for the families who were hurt or died (depending on the age of your child). Continue to pray for people involved in the event for the next few days and weeks.
  • Pull your children up on your lap and tell your children they are safe. You can only guarantee your child’s safety in the moment and for now that is what they need.
  • Allow children to play through various situations. Even 9, 10 and 11 year old kids will pull out the army men and other characters and play through their stress and fears. Stay on the sidelines, listen and observe. Just let them play through without interruptions. Bath time is another time kids will play through frustrations.
  • Lastly turn off the TV. I can’t say this loud enough TURN OFF THE TV. Younger children can’t tell the difference in reality and non-reality.

Most of all children in crisis need the adults around them to empathize with them. Children need your empathy not your pity. They need compassion and understanding.

Dr. Bruce Perry in the book “Born to Love” says,

Empathy has been eroding due to the rapid changes in our society that have become measurable over the last five years.

All in all, we have fewer daily opportunities to connect face-to face in shorter amounts of time with smaller numbers of people.

Jesus brought empathy into our world.  He understood pain and heartache and He felt what the people felt.

In church environments simply being a listening ear can be very helpful. Children in crisis need to tell their stories. It might be through art, journaling, music, a game or simply just talking one on one.

When you reach out to families in crisis, you may be the only Jesus’ hands these children feel. You may be the only one that brings God’s word to them. You may be the comforter to them and show them the comfort of the Father.

“If one of you says to him, ‘Go I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?” James 2:16 (NIV)

Connecting with Easter Peeps (Reaching Easter Visitors)

April 2, 2013 By jland Leave a Comment

land

OK, so you have just made it through another busy Easter season, I bet you are ready to relax until VBS aren’t you? Not so fast. Don’t you know there are thousands of Peeps out there waiting to be rescued. I’ve always been a big fan of Peeps and right now is the best time to buy them. You would be hard-pressed to find a store that doesn’t have a good supply of those sugar coated-marshmallow goodies on sale for 50-75% off the price you would have paid for them just three days ago. Now, for me personally, I love a good stale Peep. In fact, I really can’t stand the fresh ones. For me, a Peep can best be enjoy after sitting in an open package for about 5 days. Yummy. Just a little more chew than the fresh ones and oh so good.

I've digressed long enough, the point of this post is really about the actual PEEPS who were in your church on Sunday morning. They might have been rare attenders, irregular attenders, or first time guests. Whatever they were, make sure you do something about it. Now is not the time to sit back and relax, it is the time to get into gear. Reach out to those families and get them involved in the ministries of your church. While you are at it, be creative with it. Try using Peeps! I can't think of a sweeter way to tell someone you are glad he or she came to your church on Easter Sunday morning. Here are some ideas for using PEEPS to reach your church's Easter PEEPS.

1. Buy lots of packages of Peeps and attach some notes to them and get Sunday School teachers, Deacons, etc. to deliver them to different families. Here are some examples of some catchy sayings: "Thanks for being one of our PEEPS this Easter. Hope you come back soon!" "We hope to hear a PEEP out of you again soon!" "It was wonderful having new PEEPS at our church this Easter. Come again soon!" OK, so I know those are cheesy, but I bet they make an impression!

2. Have a Peep Family Night. Invite church families and visiting families to come back to a Friday Family night. Buy Peeps and plan Minute-to-Win-It type games using the Peeps and then make 'smores using Peeps. There's nothing better than a melted Peeps with chocolate and graham crackers.

3. Mail a card out that says "Good for one package of Peeps. Redeem at Community Church, Sunday April 14." Be prepared to give out Peeps to all who bring back the card.

4. Don't let them hear a PEEP out of you. Sadly, that's going to be the thing that most churches will do with the thousands of prospects they got on Easter morning. Nothing. There won't be any postcards, letters from the Sunday School teachers, phone calls, or visits to their houses.

So get to PEEPing. Don't just assume someone else will do it. Reach out, visit, give a hoot! Oh wait, I mean Peep! (P.S. Don't forget if you are sending me a Peep, I want mine a little stale.)

Minute-to-Win It Easter Games

March 19, 2013 By jland Leave a Comment

landI love Easter. For me, Easter is truly the marker of the beginning of Spring. This year, Easter comes a little early, but maybe that just means Spring will too! I know I’m not the only one ready to see new life in the grass and trees. For those of you who are friends of dirt like me, I’m sure you are also ready to go out and plant some flowers!

Easter is an exciting time at church. Little boys and girls will come to church in their new duds and excitedly tell you about their Easter baskets. It’s super important that we always point them back to the REAL reason why we celebrate Easter. Easter marks the resurrection of our Savior and NOTHING could be more important that celebrating the King of Kings.

How do kids celebrate? By having fun, laughing, and enjoying church. I came up with a few games that you might consider playing with your kids to help them get in a “celebratory” mood this Easter. Thanks to my coworkers, Alyssa Jones, Bethany Brown, Rachel Coe, James Hargrave, Katie DeCillo, Trudy Gardner, and Bill Emeott for “starring” in the demonstration videos below!

1. Peeps in a Nest

The Peeps have escaped from their nest and it is time to help them back. Allow one team member to hold a bucket or basket over his head while the other team member(s) toss Peeps and try to land them in the basket.

2. Jelly Bean Toss

Teams will work together to try to fill their cups with Jelly beans by tossing them across the room.

3. Cadbury Overload

Give a couple of players some mini-Cadbury eggs and see who can eat them most in a minute or less.

4. Peanut Butter Whistle

Challenge a class member to eat a Reese’s Peanunt Butter Egg and then whistle the tune “Jesus Loves Me” in one minute or less.

5. Chick and Bunny Stack Attack

Buy a bag of Chick and Bunny Mallow candy and compete to build the highest tower.

The Art of Story Telling

February 27, 2013 By Jerry Vogel 1 Comment

Jerrys Recent PhotoOne of the most foundational skills in working with kids is the art of storytelling. Each one of us needs to keep in mind tips that help us be more effective in telling Bible stories so that kids get the most out of them. Consider using this simple acrostic…

Preparing and Telling…

B ecome acquainted with the story.

I n your study, plan for as many senses as possible to be involved in telling the story.

B e sure to consider your audience–age, tastes, vocabulary.

L earn the purpose for telling the story.

E liminate events/elements that are unnecessary.

S equence the events of the story with a simple outline.

T ell the story to yourself–over and over.

O rganize a captivating introduction and crisp conclusion.

R emove any competitive influences while telling the story.

I n your lap, have an actual Bible.

E nthusiasm is a must. Kids will get just as excited and you get excited about Bible stories.

S upport your preparation experience with prayer!

Pass the salt and turn on the light!

February 4, 2013 By kstorts 2 Comments

Klista Storts photoJesus used illustrations such as being salt and light in the world to remind us that we’re not to become Christians and just keep it to ourselves. A small amount of salt can make a big difference to your favorite dish. But, if that salt sits on a shelf or gets diluted by water, it loses its ability to make a difference to your meal.  He said it’s like turning on a light and hiding it under a basket! Sure, the light’s still shining, but unless you’re under that basket with it, it’s not doing anyone any good! Jesus said we’re like that salt and light, and by sharing the good news about Him and His salvation, we can make a difference in someone’s life.  But, if we keep it to ourselves, then we’re of no help to our friends or to building God’s kingdom.

120660021He also gave us instructions on our relationships with those around us. Jesus reminded us that it’s easy to love people who love us. But the way to show the world our love for Christ is to love our enemies. Wait! Did you read that right? Love our enemies? Yes, that’s right. Jesus said that we should love and pray for people who treat us wrongly. That can be hard to do but if you pray for those people, God will help you love them, just as He loves you.

Confession time.  It’s Monday. It’s morning.  Not my favorite day and not my favorite time! But right now, I’m challenging myself today to be salt and light to the world. I’m going intentionally look for ways to show acts of kindness to those around me. Want to join me?
