1s-2s- Play with Food Boxes

Bible Story: Joseph Genesis 37; 45; 50:15-21

Life Verse: Be kind to one another. Ephesians 4:32

Life Point: God wants family members to work together.

Christ Focus: Jesus loves us all the time.

Bible Focus: Joseph helped his family have food.

Materials: Bible, several empty food boxes (cereal, crackers, and other foods younger preschoolers might recognize), newspaper, wide clear tape, laundry basket

  • Before the session, stuff the boxes with newspaper (or other stuffing) and secure the lids with clear tape. Place the boxes in the laundry basket and set it on the floor. Lay the Bible nearby.
  • Encourage children to explore how to use the boxes. A child may carry around a box or stack the boxes like blocks. Another child may want to carry the basket of boxes to another locations. Older 2s may pretend to cook with the foods.
  • Talk about Joseph and the help he gave his brothers to find food. Relate this to families providing food for children. Open the Bible and read the Life Verse.

3s–Pre-K—Make Mini Pizzas

Life Point: God always has a plan.

Bible Story: Joseph Genesis 37; 45; 50:15-21

Life Verse: Love others as I have loved you. John 15:12

Christ Focus: Bad things happened to Jesus, but God used Jesus to help and save people.

Bible Focus: Joseph helped his family have food to eat.

Materials: Bible, Allergy Alert, English muffins, pizza sauce, shredded cheddar cheese, shredded mozzarella cheese, pepperoni slices, plastic bowls, spoons, toaster oven, small paper plates, napkins

  • List the pizza ingredients on the allergy alert and post it outside your door. Slice the muffins in half and place on a plate. Put the other ingredients in bowls and add spoons for serving. Place the toaster oven out of children’s reach.
  • Lead preschoolers to spoon pizza sauce on a muffin halves and add topping of their choice. Comment on Joseph’s brothers traveling to Egypt to get grain and Joseph taking care of his brothers.
  • Toast the pizzas in the oven; set them aside to cool. Talk about ways Joseph showed love to his family. Open the Bible and read the Life Verse.

Kindergarten—Form Letters with Dry Cereal

Life Point: God always has a plan.

Bible Story: Joseph Genesis 37; 45; 50:15-21

Life Verse: Love others as I have loved you. John 15:12

Christ Focus: Bad things happened to Jesus, but God used Jesus to help and save people.

Bible Focus: Joseph’s brothers traveled to Egypt to buy food.

Materials: Bible, paper, dry oat cereal, Allergy Alert, marker, small ziplock bags

  • List the cereal on the allergy alert and post the alert by the door. Print the letters L, O, V, and E on squares of paper. Place a handful of cereal into each ziplock bag.
  • Invite a kindergartner to choose a bag of cereal and used to pieces to form letters. He may want to place the cereal on the letter’s lines on the paper or form the letter separately on the table. When he tires of forming the letters, he can eat the cereal.
  • Encourage children to put the letters in order to spell the word love. Tell the Bible story and talk about ways Joseph showed love to his brothers. Open the Bible and read the Life Verse.
