Earlier this month, members of the deaf community around the world were outraged to find that the interpreter at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service did not know sign language. Summarize this article from msnbc.com, and highlight this quote from one South African:
“The structure of his hand, facial expressions and the body movements did not follow what the speaker was saying.”
Use this as a springboard to discuss what Romans 8:26-27 says about the Holy Spirit’s role in interceding for us.
- In order for someone to be able to interpret, whether it is by sign language or translating another language, what do they need to be able to do?
- According to this passage, what makes the Holy Spirit so effective in interceding for us?
Just as the deaf need an interpreter to help them when they can’t understand something that is being said, the Holy Spirit helps us communicate with God the Father when “we do not know what to pray for as we should.” But unlike the interpreter at the Mandela service, the Holy Spirit knows how to interpret, because He lives in us (verse 11) and He knows the will of God (verse 27).
