More than a Friend

Pause

Focus your mind on God by listening to your favorite worship song. Consider “Holy Spirit, Living Breath of God” on the album Hymns for the Christian Life by the Gettys.

What qualities do people generally look for in a friend? Circle all that apply:

  • Honesty
  • Sense of humor
  • Loyalty
  • Trustworthy
  • Dependable
  • Good listener
  • Supportive
  • Other:

A true friend isn’t someone who always tells you what you want to hear. They tell you when you’re wrong. The Holy Spirit does that and more. Read John 16:5-15. Underline the things the Holy Spirit does in our lives.

“When He comes, He will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment: When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth.”

—John 16:8,13a

The Holy Spirit reveals sin. The world’s sin is choosing not to believe in Christ (v. 9).

Righteousness mean to be right, according to God’s standards.

The Holy Spirit helps us understand that Satan has already been judged (v. 10). Knowing this is true, how should we respond to Satan’s attempts to delude us?

The Holy Spirit instructs believers about what is true. How has the Holy Spirit done this in your life?
The Point

God sends His Spirit not just to be your friend, comforter, or help in temptation, but also to teach you, convict you, and help you grow in your relationship with Him.

Respond

What has the Spirit been teaching you this week? What do you need to do in order to continue to grow in your relationship with God? Jot down one action you’ll take this week.

For further study, read 1 Corinthians 2:9-16. How do these verses describe the role of the Holy Spirit in your life?

Behind the Story

In verses 5-7, Jesus explained that He was leaving and going back to the Father. Jesus had been the disciples’ constant companion in a hostile world, and they couldn’t imagine daily life without Him. He wanted to shake them out of this grief, pointing them to the powerful spiritual resource that would be available to them in the Holy Spirit.
